MOOSE JAW, Sask. – A man in Saskatchewan is dead after RCMP say he was confronted in a supermarket parking lot by municipal police who were investigating a report of an armed male uttering threats.

Mounties say in a news release that the Moose Jaw Police Service got the report at around 1:10 a.m. Sunday, and located a 27-year-old suspect in a car in a Superstore parking lot where shuttle buses were arriving from the Country Thunder music festival in Craven, Sask.

The release says local officers asked RCMP to direct the remaining buses for the night away from the store, and tried talking to the man.

But RCMP say he drove out of the parking lot and headed east on Highway 1, eventually pulling over near Belle Plaine.

RCMP and Regina police had been called to assist and crisis negotiators tried to de-escalate the situation, but at 7:00 a.m. the news release says the man pointed a firearm at the officers and wouldn’t obey commands, and police responded with gunfire.

Police say the man, who was from Moose Jaw, was injured and died, and a gun was located at the scene.

“When a police-involved incident results in death or serious injury, an investigation is conducted by an external agency,” said the RCMP release, which noted the Saskatoon Police Service will be conducting that investigation.

It also said Moose Jaw police and RCMP have requested the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer in accordance with Section 91.1 of the Saskatchewan Police Act.

The man was not identified. Police said his family has been notified.

RCMP said they would not be releasing further information because the case is now being investigated by an external agency.

They said there would continue to be detours Sunday around a section of Highway 1 near Belle Plaine due to the investigation.
