WHITEHORSE – Higher than normal temperatures and smoke from wildfires have prompted Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement for parts of Yukon today.
The national weather agency says central and northern Yukon may see temperatures in the upper 20s while overnights may hover around the lower teens through the middle of next week, which may increase snowmelt and stream flows due to runoff.
It says wildfire smoke has spread throughout central and northern parts of the territory, causing a decrease in air quality.
The special weather statement is in effect for Beaver Creek, Dawson, Dempster, Faro — Ross River, Mayo, Old Crow and Pelly — Carmacks.
A Yukon wildland fire activity report issued Thursday says a number of new lightning-caused fires have been identified, mostly in the Ross River, Faro and Carmacks areas.
It says thick, mid-level smoke from Alaskan and Yukon fires is causing “a bit of uncertainty” for temperature forecasts in central Yukon.
