VANCOUVER—Merran Smith, executive director of Clean Energy Canada, made the following statement in response to the initial results of the B.C. election:
“British Columbians have voted for change. These results send a clear message that voters expect B.C.’s next government—regardless of its composition—to build a clean economy and put climate solutions into action.
“The global shift to clean energy offers tremendous opportunity, and B.C. has a competitive advantage. Our power supply is relatively clean, and we are already cultivating the clean energy technologies and expertise that countries around the world are seeking.
“To capitalize on those emerging opportunities, British Columbia’s next government will need to champion clean growth and innovation. Delivering on these priorities will support an affordable transition to renewable energy, while cutting carbon pollution and creating jobs across the province.
“We look forward to working with the next provincial government to create the conditions for clean growth that benefits all British Columbians.”

B.C.’s annual carbon pollution is set to increase by 8 million tonnes by 2030. Carbon pollution from LNG and natural gas, industry and utilities, and transport and buildings is projected to hit 68 million tonnes in 2030 under B.C.’s current climate plan.
- Clean Energy Canada estimates that jobs would increase by 210,000 in the service sector, 35,000 in the resource sector, and 29,000 in clean energy and technology as carbon pollution decreases to meet B.C.’s commitments.
