About This Job

The Senior Policy Advisor (Federal) is responsible for:

• National and Federal policy development—engaging with the federal government (and supporting engagement with provincial governments as needed) on clean electricity, clean transportation and clean growth.
• Strategy—leading the development and execution of Clean Energy Canada’s strategy for federal engagement, as well as contributing to the development of regional strategies in Ontario, B.C. and Alberta.
• Communications—engaging in research, writing and outreach (including media, networking, speaking events and social media) to share evidence and success stories of the transition to clean energy. Includes preparing for and participating in reactive issues management.

The Senior Policy Advisor reports to the Executive Director and works collaboratively with the Policy Director, senior policy advisors in Ontario and B.C. and other members of the Clean Energy Canada team.

Responsibilities

The Senior Policy Advisor (Federal) will be expected to deliver the following:

• Policy development and analysis of clean energy and climate solutions, with a focus on clean electricity, clean transportation, clean growth and carbon pricing policies;
• Research and writing of reports, policy briefs, media materials and other communications initiatives;
• Engagement on behalf of Clean Energy Canada in initiatives with governments, businesses and other civil society groups to advance policy initiatives, better understand stakeholder positions and find areas of common ground on climate and clean energy policies;
• Act as the Secretariat of the Canadian Council on Renewable Electricity;
• Media commentary, in both mainstream media (including political broadcast shows) and via social media platforms
• Convening events, workshops and other initiatives.

Qualifications and Skills Required

The role of Senior Policy Advisor requires at least five years of policy advocacy experience covering areas such as renewable energy policy, climate change policy (with a focus on carbon pricing) and clean transportation policy. Required areas of experience include strategy development and evaluation, research and analysis, stakeholder engagement and social media, and a proven track record of government relations and media engagement.

The role requires the following skills and attributes:

• Passionate, with a solid understanding of clean energy and climate policies.
• Self-directed, assertive and capable of generating good strategies and tactics and following through to implement them, independently or in collaboration with teammates and/or external partners.
• Experienced in government, business and NGO relations, and ideally with relationships in clean energy portfolios.
• A good communicator, experienced with media, public speaking and effective writing.
• A detail-oriented doer who takes initiative and gets things done efficiently without compromising the quality or accuracy of their work.
• A creative and critical thinker who thrives when experimenting and adapting to a rapidly shifting context.
• Proficiency in French would be an asset.

Compensation

Clean Energy Canada offers a competitive non-profit salary, vacation and health benefits package. This position is a one-year contract with the possibility of extension and potential for advancement.
